A Poem to Inspire

I want to share this poem with you today. It is written by the talented poet Naomi Shihab Nye. I hope that it inspires you this week, as you cultivate a sense of purpose for your creative endeavor in the coming year.

ALWAYS BRING A PENCIL

There will not be a test.
It does not have to be a Number 2 pencil.

But there will be certain things –
the quiet flush of waves,
ripe scent of fish,
smooth ripple of the wind’s second name –
that prefer to be written about
in pencil.

It gives them more room
to move around.

This period – from the darkest night of the year to the trembling of early spring – will be all about gathering energy. We will be taking a journey together. At the end of this period, we will have a clear sense of direction and the structure to support our undertaking. This is probably the most important three months of a creative project, for we will be setting intention for its fruition.

This poem reminds us to have fun. It speaks to the notion that inspiration may not come from the words actually written but the doodling that may occur at the margins. Be on the lookout during the next three months. The universe will begin to speak to you in unusual ways. Embrace the possibilities. This isn’t a test. It is a joyous pursuit into uncharted waters. Bring your pencil.

This verse speaks to the notion that inspiration may not come from the words actually written but the doodling that will occur at the margins.
